Road Trip to Austin

Seven weeks old and Eli is already proving himself to be a good travel buddy. We survived our first road trip. Kit and Shelly are visiting before they venture off to Thailand for a month then move to San Francisco. So off the Doggetts went to spend some quality family time together!

Fancy shmancy. We stayed at the Driskill Hotel. An old, famous historical hotel on 6th street that I didn't know existed until now.

Psst, psst. Mommy, I pooped on the fancy, shmancy bedspread.

A good sport. Stephen is getting better and better with going with the flow while on vacation. It may be that he now has extra estrogen in the mix or that his son's have developed a different travel style, but gone are the days when the family stopped to look at every historical marker, hike every trail, visit every museum, and skip the unimportant meals. Here Stephen is, sitting on a cowskin sofa, in a dimly lit lounge, drinking an overpriced beer. Progress people, it's progress. Or maybe just defeat. That look says defeat.

Speaking of lounging, the hotel had these super-cute miniature chaise lounge chairs in the lobby. C'mon. What kind of mother would I be if I didn't subject my child to awkward, embarrassing photo-ops?

Keep moving. Just keep moving. Our travel stroller came in very handy. Eli slept 88% of the time, but only if the strolling remained in constant motion. The bumpier the ride, the better. Here we are visiting the state capital, a first for me and Eli. We completed seven laps around the rotunda while Stephen and Kasey roamed around the halls.

Kasey loves two things, me and salsa. We had lunch a Guero's, and Kasey dove face first into the chips and salsa. He is a registered salsa connoisseur. He eats Mexican food 3-4 days a week and ranks Mexican food restaurants by their salsa. If you need consultation, his fees are negiotable.

Barton Creek. A beautiful place to watch Austonians (?) in their natural habitat. While the rest of the family enjoyed some swimming in the cold, cold, cold spring-fed water, Eli and I took in the fresh outdoor air. By the way, if you have the choice between breast-feeding freely out in public and in the car, choose A. When in Austin, do as the Austinites (?) do, let it show. Well, not really, we were discrete.

Ants in your pants. I thought Kasey was delusional, complaining about invisible ants crawling on him but as it turns out, there were indeed ants crawling on him. This booger left his mark on Kasey's back. Everyone else remained unharmed.

  1. What a nice escape for the Doggett family. I'm glad y'all are re-training Stephen...we too have to traipse up every trail, hike to the highest point, and wait while he reads every historical marker. However...our beers at midday and continual laughter and fun make it all worthwhile! We wouldn't trade those experiences for anything. Eli is a lucky guy to be a Doggett.

  3. I forgot to mention that we took Danny on his first road trip to the state Capitol and the Alamo when he was THREE weeks old! We drove there and back on the same day from Fort Worth...four adults and him in a Toyota Celica. That was BC - before car seats!
